Sedation Dentistry in Hampton Vic

Nitrous Oxide

Dental fear and anxiety is extremely common and most people experience some degree of anxiety when visiting the dentist.

Being afraid of the dentist can be due to a number of factors.

Among younger patients, it can be because of the lack of accurate information. They may have heard stories from their peers, seen inaccurate portrayals of dental procedures online or in the media.

For adults, unpleasant past experiences contribute to this fear. It can trigger a flight or fight response, making it hard for the dentist to perform the required treatments. Dental phobia causes patients to avoid dental visits at all costs. This jeopardises their oral health and can lead to much larger health issues in the future.

  • Completely safe
  • Reduces tension and anxiety
  • Decreases pain and discomfort to a minimal level
  • Minimises gagging reflex during the procedure
  • Gives you a very pleasant dental experience. As a result, this helps you be more confident about visiting us more frequently.

Dr Max offers happy gas as a method of reducing pain and anxiety for a patient. After a few minutes with happy gas, patients will generally experience a pleasurable or euphoric state. The experience has been explained by Dr Max as a kind of light-headed happy state that can cause you to giggle (giving it the nickname laughing gas).

The procedure is very safe and effective. In essence, sedation dentistry is a great option to help you relax during dental procedures providing a comfortable safety net for patients that suffer from dental anxiety.

Happy Gas is nitrous oxide. It reduces pain (where the term relative analgesia comes in) and produces a pleasurable feeling. Immediately on administration there is no noticeable effect, however after about three to five minutes of easy breathing, the patient should feel a growing euphoric feeling. Some people experience a pleasant tingling in their fingers and toes and some have some auditory or visual effects. It is possible to feel a bit light headed and some get the giggles hence the name laughing gas.

Nitrous Oxide (Happy Gas)
What to expect with happy gas/inhalation sedation dentistry:

Initially you will breathe in 100% oxygen. The happy gas will be slowly added to the oxygen and adjusted to ensure your comfort. The effects of happy gas will start in less than 5 minutes from initial intake (breathing).

Dr Max administers the happy gas while you are in the dental chair. You will breathe through a nasal hood. Dr Max will determine that you are in a relaxed state of mind. He will closely monitor sedation levels to ensure you are comfortable.

Most commonly patients are still aware of what is happening around them but they will feel more relaxed, dreamy and floaty, warm, have tingling in their hands and feet and may be a bit forgetful. Often, patients do not even require local anaesthetic injections for their treatments.

How long do the effects of happy gas last?

The effects of happy gas wear off quickly, approximately 10 to 15 minutes. You will be able to drive and go about your day to day business as normal.

Happy gas is a great option for relief of anxiety during dental appointments. For more information on nitrous oxide sedation dentistry, book a consultation with Dr Max today.
